Stanley Claridge, Shy's stepfather, began sexually abusing her when she was around three to four years old. The abuse continued until her teens.

Shy began to rebuild her life, though the trauma of her childhood continued to affect her relationships and mental health.

Shy co-founded a support and advocacy movement for survivors of child sexual abuse, helping bring perpetrators to justice and lobbying for reform.

Shy's memoir "Broken" was published, chronicling the abuse she endured and her resolve to expose her abusers.

Tragedy struck when Shy's fourteen-year-old son Ayden died by suicide. Shy has since campaigned for "Ayden's Law".
